History in short
Galleria Contemporaneo is a public exhibition
space successfully managed by the Cultural Heritage and Production
sector of the City of Venice.
Opened in 1998, after the restoration works of the former public
library, the gallery, even though irregularly, was the venue of
important exhibitions among which: a retrospective show on Alberto
Viani (1906-1989), sculptor who lived for several years in Mestre,
accompanied by three significant series of photographs dedicated
to the artist by Ugo Mulas (catalogue published by Mazzotta);
the solo exhibitions by Duane Michaels and Stephen Shore, internationally
renowned photographers; the group show Natura della Luce-Nature
of Light (catalogue published by Marsilio) that inaugurated a
great series of collaborations with both public and private, Italian
and international exhibition spaces; the group shows organised
together with the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, the Archivio
Giovani Artisti and the Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani.
New programming
Since May 2006 the Galleria Contemporaneo aims
to strengthen the collaboration not just with similar contemporary
arts public spaces, but also with those private galleries whose
research is absolutely noteworthy. A flexible and open space,
responsive not just on a local level, but on a national and international
level too.
Clearly and exclusively dedicated to contemporary visual arts,
the gallery is a place for production, research, analysis, confrontation,
discussion and exchange among artists, curators, experts and a
widely varied audience. The dynamism and flexibility on which
its new identity is based ensure the production of highly innovative
site specific projects, the actual ability to provide artists
with facilities and spaces for their research and an always up
to date program of events, seminars, lectures and talks in an
ongoing exchange with the outside and a diverse public.
Galleria Contemporaneo is institutionally coordinated
along with the Centro Culturale Candiani in Mestre
and they develop together specific projects for the exhibition
spaces of the centre. The aim is to foster the image of Mestre
and of the whole Venice mainland, enhancing it and making it more
visible with a cultural programme specifically oriented towards
contemporaneity able to complete that of the city of Venice.
The space
The exhibition space of approximately 300 square metres is a sophisticated
white cube without windows and with wide white unbroken walls:
an extremely flexible space with four exhibition rooms on the
ground floor whose structure and facilities allow the production
of ambitious installation projects.
The gallery is in central Mestre, an area currently on the way
of a deep social change and particularly rich with contrasts emphasized
also by the mix and coexistence of different ethnic groups. That’s
why, with a fresh program and communication that often involve
the urban space itself, the Galleria Contemporaneo
aspires to keep alive the strong relation with its social and
territorial context.
